Light Portal: A Gateway to the Future

QUAD Studio's Award-Winning Design for Yibin's Highspeed Rail City

Located adjacent to Yibin High Speed Rail Station, the Light Portal is a symbol of Yibin's geographical significance and the city's ideal lifestyle in the new era. The design features 160m tall mixed-use Twin Towers that frame a 1km long landscape boulevard. This urban park, conceived by QUAD Studio, is a colorful painting for this green ecological city.

The Twin Towers are a beacon of light for the new Yibin High Speed Rail City. They are not just architectural marvels but also represent the city's commitment to ecological sustainability and innovation. The towers are designed with vertical aluminum fins as the main solar shading device. The parametric-designed incremental change in fin depth along the façade generates an elegant wave pattern, echoing the Yangtze River concept.

QUAD Studio's design philosophy goes beyond the surface. They believe a park should be a multi-dimensional living platform rather than a flat surface. To maximize the use of underground spaces, a Botanic Educational Centre and a Sports Centre will be built underground in the east side of the park. This integration of architecture and nature shapes new lifestyles for future residents of Highspeed Rail City.

The Light Portal was not without its challenges. The architects had to complete the design within a tight construction cost and limited time. Extra focus was put on designing terraces, public stars, and ramps in the central park due to its significant level difference along the north-south axis. Local plant species were carefully chosen to be evergreen, easy to maintain, and compatible in colors and shapes with the site surroundings.

Despite these challenges, QUAD Studio's Light Portal stands as a testament to the power of innovative design. It is a masterplan of Yibin Highspeed Rail City, a reform of lifestyle that caters to all ages all year round. The Twin Towers serve as a light portal to guide visitors as well as a landmark for residents to assemble.
